Good analysis of the announcement and Medium's inability to monetize their professional offerings. One thing that was not mentioned was that some authors, with decent-sized audiences, are using such platforms as Substack and Revue to generate more income. Why would you focus on Medium to make less money? If you have a large audience, why not offer a newsletter for $5 a month (and have more than 1,000 paid subscribers). The math works.

ConvertKit isn't free if you have more than 1,000 subs...paid or unpaid. Those monthly fees add up, and for starting newsletter publishers, can be pricey. I have 8,000 free subscribers on Substack...and it costs NOTHING...to send out a newsletter to that many subs. Yes, Substack taking a 10 percent cut, before credit card fees, is draconian once you go paid (plus lack of customization and kind of crappy SEO). At the same time, if you offer a digital product besides a newsletter, ConvertKit is a solid choice. But those monthly fees can kill you...especially if you haven't started generating much revenue.
